Today I watched The King's Speech and The Hurt Locker. These two movies won Best Picture in 2011 and 2010.
2011- The King's Speech
Here is the trailer:
I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it was a very interesting and at time entertaining movie. To be honest I got a little teary eyed at the end of the film. It is just such a great movie. It's about how King George VI of Britain, who is Queen Elizabeth II father became king and his challenge with a stammer. It was funny to see the different ways his speech therapist, who by the way didn't have any credentials to be a speech therapist, helped him overcome his stammer. If you haven't seen it I would recommend that you should go and see it.
Now for some random things I noticed about this movie. There are three people in this movie who were in the Harry Potter movies. Helena Bonham who plays Queen Elizabeth in TKS played Bellatrix Lestrange in HP. Michael Gambon who plays King George V in TKS played Professor Albus Dumbledore in HP. Timothy who plays Winston Churchill in TKS played Wormtail (Peter Pettigrew) in HP. There is also a person in this movie that was in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. That person is Geoffrey Rush who plays Lionel Logue (the speech therapist) played Captain Barbossa in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
2010- The Hurt Locker
Here is the trailer:
To be honest I hated this movie. I have no idea how it won Best Picture!! It was so boring for me that maybe more than half way through I started playing solitaire on my computer and then I didn't even notice that it ended until I looked up and saw the credits rolling. If someone starts playing solitaire and doesn't even notice that movie is done I think that is saying something about the movie. Maybe some of you feel like I shouldn't put this on my list of Best Picture movies I've seen since I kind of quit watching it but I watched enough to know what it is about. It's pretty much about an elite Army bomb squad unit that goes around Baghdad defusing bombs that have been found and trying to determine if the people around the area where the bombs were found are friendly people or the bombers themselves.
It's not like I wanted to see more explosions and violence to make it more interesting but I wanted something. I was fine not having to see horrible violence but I could have been fine with a whole lot less "F"-bombs. And yes pun intended :) After I finished "watching" the movie I called my mom and told her that I would rather watch Saving Private Ryan again then watch this one again. Yes Saving Private Ryan is a very gory and violent film but it was just so much more interesting to me.
Like I said at the beginning I honestly have no idea how this movie won Best Picture. I still think Avatar should have won cause it was soo much more interesting and they did a lot of cool special effects for it. I was reading some trivia about this movie and it said that this movie was the first dramatic feature film about the Iraq War to win an Academy Award. It was also the first movie about a modern war to win an Academy Award where the war wasn't World War I, World War II or the Vietnam War. You can disagree with me on my next comment and that's fine by me but I think the reason this movie won was because of politics. Why else would it win?
Coming Attractions: 2000, 1999 and 1998 winners.
