I thought the Academy Awards were great this year. Billy Crystal was great as host and he had some pretty funny lines at times.
At church today I was talking with some of my friends and asked them if they were excited about the Academy Awards today. They looked at me like I was a crazy person for being so excited and said that they didn't even know that the Academy Awards were even on tonight. How could you not know they were on but I forgave them for not knowing :)
Earlier today I was looking on-line at some trivia/facts about the Academy Awards and I thought I would share some with you:
* The Oscar is made out of tin, copper and antimony, with a thick covering of 24- karat gold.
* The Oscar weighs 8.5 pounds.
* The awards "Oscar" reportedly got its nickname after Bette Davis said that it resembled her then husband Harmon Oscar Nelson.
* Titanic holds the record of most film nominations which was 14 but they only won 11.
* Walt Disney holds the record of most Oscars given to one person. He has 22 Oscars.
* Marilyn Monroe was never nominated for an Oscar even though she is a film legend.
* 1968 is the first and so far only time that a lead actress category ended in a tie. Katharine Hepburn and Barbara Streisand shared this award.
On to tonight's events. Here are the awards that I was interested in.
Actress in a Supporting Role- Octavia Spencer
She won for The Help. I really wanted her to win because I thought she did an excellent job playing Minny in The Help.
Actor in a Supporting Role- Christopher Plummer
If you don't know who Christopher Plummer is shame on you. He is the actor who played Captain von Trapp in his younger years. To be honest I believe he was the only one in this category that deserved to win. There was one actor that I really didn't want to win because I don't think he is that great of an actor and he has been in movies that are so crude and nasty. Any way Christopher (yes I am on a first name basis with him) won this award for being in the film Beginners. I haven't heard of this movie so I went on-line to see what it was about. It is about a young man dealing with the death of his father and a new relationship with a woman with father issues as well. The man also has to come to terms when his father (Christopher) who is 75 years old tells him that he is gay after his mother passes away.
I thought that it is interesting that this is his 1st Academy Award and that he has only been nominated twice. He is 82 years old and is the oldest acting actor to win an Academy Award.
Actress in a Lead Role- Meryl Streep
I was upset that Viola Davis didn't win for her role in The Help. I really wanted her to win but oh well. I understand why Meryl Streep won, she has been nominated 17 times and hasn't won an Oscar since the 80's and maybe she did a good job in her movie. I will admit that she is a very good actress. She does so well of getting into character and you truly believe she is that character. I really liked her when she played Julia Child in Julie and Julia.
Actor in a Lead Role- Jean Dujardin
He is the lead actor in The Artist. I don't know anything about this movie. I wanted Gary Oldman to win because I like him as an actor and he does a great job. I'm just so incredibly happy that George Clooney and Brad Pitt didn't win. I don't like either one of them. I won't go into why I don't like them right now. If you want to know go to my earlier posts and I explain why. Jean is a french actor and man is his accent soo sexy. I love a french accent. I don't remember what he said in his acceptance speech cause I was too busy listening to his accent :)
Best Director- Michael Hazanavicius
He directed The Artist. He is also a french man which means he also has a very sexy accent :) In this category I really didn't care who won cause there were none that I was hoping would win. I was happy that he won mainly so that I could hear his accent when he talked.
This is a random thought but I should marry a guy with a french accent so that I can hear it all the time. Sadly this will probably never happen cause I don't think many french people live in Yakima, WA. I guess I should go move to France for this dream to happen :)
Best Picture- The Artist
I was hoping that The Help would win cause I thought it was a very good movie. I'm happy that the films with George Clooney and Brad Pitt didn't win. I have noticed in the last couple of years that when the director wins for best director that usually the film that they directed would win for best picture. When the director won for The Artist I had a good feeling that The Artist would win for best picture and I was right. Sometimes this doesn't happen but lately it has. I now have another movie to put on my list of best pictures to watch. Once I watch The Artist I will let you know if I think it truly should have won best picture.
Coming Attractions: 1998 and 1997 Best Picture
