Today has been an awesome day. I pretty much just stayed home and watched movies. The only time I went outside was to return the movies that I rented. To some that might sound boring but I quite enjoyed it.
1988- The Last Emperor
I was kind of skeptical that I was going to like this movie but I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was going to be boring and have a lot of the movie in Chinese. But like I said I was surprised. There were some scenes that I didn't care for but even with those scenes I still thought it was a very good movie. I would watch this movie again because I really enjoyed it and it was interesting to learn a little bit about the Chinese culture. If you are interested in watching this movie I would totally recommend it to you.
If you don't know what the movie is about here is a very brief summary: It is the story of the last emperor of China. If you want more info, go watch the movie :) It was interesting to learn about the last emperor and to be honest I didn't think China has emperors still at that time. In 1908 Puyi became emperor at the ripe old age of 2 years old. I didn't even know that this was a true story until I was reading about the movie. If you knew that this was a true story or even heard about the last emperor then I feel real stupid right now.
There is a scene in the movie that made my mouth drop. You will think it's dumb but I was quite impressed. Any way the scene shows a woman walking down some steps carrying her young son who will become the emperor and she is wearing pedestal shoes or in other words platform shoes and she doesn't fall down. She isn't even holding onto anything to keep her steady. I was AMAZED. I feel like I am going to fall and break my ankle when I am wearing my heels. The sad thing is my heels aren't even that tall.
Here are what the shoes looked like that the character was wearing. Can you believe it? I still can't.
Another thing in the movie that I didn't understand is why do all the Chinese men have their heads shaved except for the hair on the back of their heads that they have in a braid. If you know please tell me.
1987- Platoon
Lets just say I hated this movie. I plan on never watching it again. If you liked it then that's fine but for me I hated it. The movie was ok to a certain point and when I saw that scene I automatically hated the film. I will explain that scene later on. So pretty much that scene ruined the movie for me. I also didn't care for the language. I understand that it's a war movie and soldiers probably don't have the cleanest language and maybe that is how they really talk, but do they really need to say the F word that many times.
Charlie Sheen was in this movie in his cute younger and non crazy years. Maybe he was crazy back then but he just hid it from everyone. Johnny Depp was also in this movie and he still had his cute baby face. Johnny isn't that bad looking now but I don't think he is as cute as he used to be. The same goes with Charlie. The craziness, drugs and alcohol has made him really ugly.
Onto the scene that made me hate this movie. In this scene the platoon has come to a village and they are looking around finding people and they find a woman and her mentally disabled son hiding in a hole. The soldiers tell them to get out of the hole and they start yelling at them and asking the son questions. The son just stands there and smiles and the soldiers start making fun of him. They do that for some time and they decide that maybe they should stop. Well one soldier doesn't think they should stop and ends up beating the son to death with his gun. When they first started making fun of the kid I ended up turning the volume off cause I just didn't want to hear it. I don't understand why they thought it was ok to do that and to even have it in the movie. I felt like it had nothing to do with the story line and they should have just cut that scene. Even today why do people think it's ok to make fun of some one who is mentally disabled. It just makes me so mad and sad. I have worked with children who have disabilities and they are the kindest, most loving people I have ever met.
I think out of all the movies I have seen this movie and The Departed are the only ones that I really hate. There are some other movies that I just didn't like but these two I hate.
